Why is it that when we think of skin care we often only focus on our face when our skin is literally our largest organ? The irony. A complete body skin care routine makes sense but oftentimes we neglect our arms, legs, and everything in between even though that skin is important, too! A few summers ago I neglected my poor legs so badly that I ended up with dry, scaly patches and they took a LONG time to get rid of. Not my proudest moment but hey, we live and learn, right?!
We’ve all been there—pampering our faces like they’re made of glass, while our poor bodies are over here like, “Hello? Anyone?” Newsflash: your skin doesn’t stop at your chin. Neglecting your body’s skin care routine can lead to dryness, rough patches, and even premature aging.
Think about it – your body’s skin deals with its own daily stressors: environmental pollutants, sweat, friction from clothing, and even the sun.
Taking care of your skin from head to toe ensures it stays soft, hydrated, and glowing year-round not to mention scale free! In this post, we’ll walk through the ultimate body skin care routine for silky smooth skin. By following these steps, you’ll be on your way to healthier, more radiant skin from top to bottom.

What is a body skin care routine?
Just like your face, the skin on the rest of your body needs some love, too. A good body skin care routine is really just applying the steps that work on your face to the rest of your body. Try not to overthink this. A good body skin care routine doesn’t have to be complicated. If you are like me you might be thinking “great, ANOTHER thing I have to do everyday” (hence why I ended up with scaly, dry patches) but let me reassure you, you don’t necessarily have to do your body skin care routine everyday!
There are likely times when you will feel your skin is more dry than others and you can adjust your routine for those times. Also, there’s no need to exfoliate more than once a week.
Keep it simple and of course, keep it clean! You know I’ll always advocate for the use of clean skin care and clean makeup whenever possible because your health should be first priority no matter what.
A good body skin care routine isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling good too. When your skin is properly cared for, it’s healthier, less prone to irritation, and way more comfortable to live in (because let’s be honest, nobody likes feeling like they’re trapped in a dry, flaky shell). Plus, smooth, glowing skin is a serious confidence booster, don’t you think?
Whether you’re rocking your pink tankini in summer or wrapping up in cozy sweaters for winter, knowing your skin is on point just makes you feel… well, fabulous! So, if you’re ready to upgrade your body care game, stick with me here —I’m about to break it all down, step-by-step.

The Best Skin Care Routine For The Body – 5 Simple Steps
Step 1: Cleansing – Start with a Fresh Canvas
The first step in any good skincare routine is cleansing, and your body is no different. Remember I told you it would likely sound pretty similar to what you’re already doing for your face?! Choosing the right body cleanser is essential for maintaining your skin’s natural moisture barrier. Look for gentle, clean, sulfate-free cleansers that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. A hydrating body wash with ingredients like glycerin or shea butter is perfect for daily use, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin.
It’s important to note that while daily cleansing is great, you should avoid over-washing, as this can lead to dryness and irritation. And listen, I know a nice, hot shower feels like therapy, but don’t crank that water up too high! Lukewarm is your skin’s best friend. Your goal: clean, not crispy.
Step 2: Exfoliation – Slough Away Dead Skin
Exfoliating is a crucial part of any body skin care routine. It helps remove dead skin cells, leaving your skin smoother and allowing your moisturizer to penetrate deeper.
Imagine trying to moisturize over layers of dead skin. Yowzahs, right? Exfoliating is like hitting refresh for your skin—bye bye, flaky patches! Now, you’ve got two ways to do this: you can physically scrub your way to smoothness with sugar or salt scrubs (just think of it as a mini massage), or you can take the gentler chemical route with AHA-infused body products.
For physical exfoliation, a body scrub with sugar or salt can do wonders. Use it in circular motions to gently buff away rough patches. For those looking for a more gentle option, a chemical exfoliant with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic or lactic acid will dissolve dead skin without the need for scrubbing. Just remember to exfoliate no more than twice a week, as overdoing it can lead to irritation. Your skin will thank you with a smoother texture and a more radiant glow!
Step 3: Moisturizing – Hydration is Key
Moisturizing is perhaps the most important step in any skincare routine. After cleansing and exfoliating, your skin is primed and ready to absorb moisture. If exfoliation is the appetizer, moisturizing is the main course. This is where your skin gets to really soak in the good stuff, so don’t skimp on it! The key to soft, supple skin is choosing the right moisturizer for your skin type. For dry or sensitive skin, opt for rich creams or body butters containing ingredients like shea butter or ceramides, which help strengthen the skin barrier and lock in moisture.
If you have oily or combination skin, go for lightweight lotions with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which provide hydration without feeling greasy. Apply your moisturizer while your skin is still damp to seal in moisture and achieve that all-day softness.
Step 4: Targeting Problem Areas – Extra Care for Elbows, Knees, and Heels
Certain areas of the body, like your elbows, knees, and heels, (did you go into singing mode just now, too?) tend to be drier and rougher than others. These problem areas can require a little extra TLC. After exfoliating, apply a thick, emollient-rich moisturizer or a body balm specifically designed for dry patches.
For the heels, you might also want to incorporate an overnight treatment by applying a heavy-duty cream and wearing socks to lock in moisture. Regular exfoliation combined with consistent moisturizing will help soften these areas over time, leaving your entire body feeling smooth and even-toned.
Step 5: Sun Protection – Don’t Skip SPF
You wouldn’t skip sunscreen on your face, so why would you leave your body unprotected? Sun damage is one of the biggest causes of premature aging and can lead to dark spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Protecting your skin with a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30 is a must for maintaining healthy skin and should definitely be part of your body skin care routine.
Choose a sunscreen that’s formulated for the body and free of harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate. Many sunscreens now come in clean, eco-friendly formulas that are reef-safe and great for sensitive skin. Apply sunscreen generously, especially if you’re spending time outdoors, and reapply every two hours.
Your skin will stay healthy, hydrated, and youthful for years to come and don’t worry you will likely still get a bit of a tan! Where are my millennial ladies who lived through the baby oil beach days, too? Yikes!
